LAREDO, TX – In its thirteenth annual Candlelight Vigil, the Pillar organization invites everyone to this crusade on September 10 at 7:45 p.m., at 7105 N. Bartlett Ave.
An average of 260 people have taken the step of no return, after taking their lives because they considered it an escape from their afflictions.
Mourners of suicide victims attend, and some of them narrate the lives of their loved ones.
This year’s event will include Bishop James A. Tamayo of the Diocese, Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño, and State Representative Richard Pena Raymond.
The vigil seeks to mitigate suicide in the community, and this solemn event honors the memory of those who took their lives.
Even if years have passed, the pain faced by family members doesn’t disappear.
Pillar provides support for family and friends, raising awareness about mental health care.
Each vigil carries a symbolic and emotional dimension for those who attend.
«My brother committed suicide three years ago. It’s a pain that my parents and family at home haven’t been able to overcome,» said Rossie Romo Gonzalez. «The question remains whether or not we understood his needs. It’s something difficult for families of those who commit suicide.»
Romo said that during past vigils, they have found peace and understand the difficult times they are going through.
She indicated that they bring numerous candles to assign to those who attend, because each candle they light inspires reflection on prevention, and hope will remain alive.
Dr. Julie Bazan, president of the Committee Against Suicide, said that the 15 people who have taken their lives is a high number, indicating that they must work with more tools to guide them, as the 988 is the life line.
Bazan said there are various organizations interested in helping people who are experiencing a crisis.
