LAREDO, TX. – A chemical spill training at a TAMIU lab brought firefighters, paramedics, and Border Patrol agents to the University on Saturday. The drills in different areas of the emergency are part of a general security plan for the population, said Ricardo Oliva, spokesman for the Fire Department.» The emergency mobility arose inside the university laboratory where professors and students were intoxicated,» said Oliva. «The interest is focused on coordinating actions of chemical experts, teachers, students, firefighters, and the Border Patrol.»The purpose of the drill is to identify areas of risk, rescue, and mobility, as well as to coordinate the actions of the participating groups. The spill occurred in a building on the south of the university, the emergency was notified on 9.11 and the expert team of firefighters in dangerous chemical spills came to the building to rescue the injured. They extracted the injured from the building, subjected them to a decontaminator and later the ambulances moved them to the hospital.»The victim must be decontaminated because it is a process that will obviate the continuation of the contamination in the ambulance or hospital,» Oliva said. The scenario allowed the teams to work with certainty and take actions coordinated by a supervisor in the area of hazardous chemicals.
